Teen sentenced to six years for causing garda's death

19-year-old Jamie McGrenaghan had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Garda Robbie McCallion in Donegal in 2009.

A 19-YEAR-OLD MAN HAS been sentenced to seven years for dangerous driving causing the death of Garda Robbie McCallion, with the final year suspended.

Jamie McGrenaghan, of Gortnathraw, Cashel, Kerrykeel, Co Donegal, was sentenced yesterday after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing death, the Irish Times reports.

McGrenaghan was earlier acquitted of the manslaughter of Garda McCallion, 29, in March 2009.

McCallion died two weeks after sustaining serious head injuries when he was struck by a car in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

He and his garda colleagues had been responding to reports of a stolen car when a car driven at their patrol car struck McCallion as he stood by the vehicle.

McGrenaghan was also sentenced to three years for stealing a car, three for numerous burglary and criminal damage charges, and five for endangering Garda Joanne Doherty and Garda Shane Lavelle on the night Garda McCallion was injured. The sentences will run concurrently, according to the BBC.

McGrenaghan has been banned from driving for life.
