Irish teenagers as young as 12 are on Tinder and Cork has highest number of users

Almost 1 in 4 students said they witnessed cyber-bullying in the last school year.

IT WILL COME as no great surprise to hear that 55% of students surveyed in a study said they feel they’re ‘addicted’ to their phones.

Girls seem to have a harder time ‘switching off’ with 68% admitting to an attachment versus 55% of the boys.

That’s according a study from Studyclix.ie which surveyed almost 5,000 students.

It also found that 13% of students surveyed have a profile on online dating site Tinder.

The amount of students with a profile increased incrementally from 8% of students at junior level (12 – 15 year olds) to 24% of boys in 6th year and 15% of girls in 6th year.

Facebook is the most popular social media platform with 81% of students, Snapchat isn’t far behind on 80% and Instagram is placed third at 68% – while twitter trails fourth at 53%.

Bullying and drinking 

Almost one quarter (24%) of students surveyed have witnessed an example of cyber-bullying in the last school year.

The highest rate of cyber-bullying was found in counties Wicklow and Westmeath while the lowest was in Roscommon:

  •  Wicklow and Westmeath 38%
  • Wexford 35%
  • Offaly 32%
  • Cork 28%
  • Dublin 26%
  •  Limerick  25%
  •  Galway 18%
  • Roscommon 17%

When asked about drinking, 42% of students surveyed revealing that they drink ‘regularly’.

When 1st year students were questioned - 88% said they ‘never drink’ and 6% said they drink on ‘special occasions’.

These figure changed for 6th year students, 19% said they ‘never drink’ and 65% said they drink on ‘special occasions’.

The survey also found that school is the most stressful thing in the life of 56% of students questioned, 10% said their family of how they looked cause them most stress while 5% said it was a romantic relationship.

Some 4,822 secondary school students took part in the survey.
