GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EACH WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you five things you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #DOCTORS: The Government is being called upon to reduce the working hours of non-consultant hospital doctors. The IMO – which represents doctors – has launched a campaign to call for an end to the practice whereby younger practitioners are routinely required to work shifts in excess of 24 hours.

2. #SHOOTING: Gardaí in Dublin 8 are appealing for witnesses after a man was shot dead at Grand Canal View, close to St James’s Hospital just before 10.30am. He received gunshot wounds to the chest. A burnt-out car was later found nearby.

3. #SEANAD: Fine Gael has officially launched its campaign to abolish the Seanad. Minister Richard Bruton – who is to be the party’s Director of Elections – says the upper house of parliament is a luxury we can no longer afford. The referendum is due to be held in October.

4. #GARDA RECRUITMENT: Justice Minister Alan Shatter has announced recruitment for the force is set to recommence, after being suspended for several years as part of the public sector hiring freeze. The process is due to start later this year, and the minister says he’s expecting a large number of applicants.

5. #SHARKS: Around 30 small sharks have been rescued, after they were trapped in a pool of water cut-off from the sea on a north Dublin beach. Jeff Williams and his family, from Rush, worked for 35 minutes to free them, and release them back to safety.
