1. #BANDON: Two people have been charged with the murder of a man whose body was pulled from the river in Bandon, west Cork on Monday. Gardaí are also investigating a second body discovered yesterday, and that probe is also expected to become a murder inquiry.
2. #EURO 2012: In case a sore head isn’t already reminding you, Ireland have officially qualified for the 2012 European Championships after a 1-1 draw with Estonia at the Aviva stadium last night. Robbie Keane has said the game was “a night that we’ll never forget”.
3. #ENDA KENNY: Taoiseach Enda Kenny is due in Berlin this morning for bilateral talks with German chancellor Angela Merkel. On his first official visit to Germany, Kenny is expected to push for more leeway on Ireland’s IMF/EU bailout programme.
4. #PENROSE: Fallout is continuing today after the resignation of Minister of State for Housing Willie Penrose, who quit over plans to close a barracks in Mullingar. Local councillor Dan McCarthy told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that six Labour councillors may follow Penrose – who he called a “hero” – by resigning tonight.
5. #DRUGS: Ireland has one of the most severe drug problems in the EU – ranking in the top three countries for drug deaths, while heroin use is the highest in Europe, according to new figures from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction.
6. #WHITE HOUSE: The US Secret Service is investigating after it emerged that a bullet hit a window of the White House. The bullet was stopped by security glass after breaking the original window, NBC reports.
7. #FACEBOOK: Facebook is battling to cope with a large quantity of hardcore pornography and violent images which has been appearing in many users’ news feeds. The social network claims to have identified those responsible, according to Bloomberg.
8. #SCHOOLS: A school with no pupils finally closed yesterday in Clonkeen, Co Kerry – after its principal had been paid to open the classroom every day for the past seven weeks despite no children having enrolled. The Irish Times reports that staff member Denis O’Sullivan will now be reassigned.
9. #OOPS: Bank of America has been caught in a spectacular social media fail – after posts on its Google Plus profile published unflattering photos of executives, mocked those who had lost their homes, and made jokes about the US bank bailout. There is confusion over whether the profile was hacked, or had been a fake all along…
