The Daily Fix: Friday

In tonight’s Fix: A TD says he’s not paying the household charge (but you shouldn’t follow his lead); temperatures are dropping even more tonight; and check out the video for the #twitterxmassingle…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you a round-up of all the day’s main news as well as the bits and pieces you may have missed.

  • A draft of last week’s EU deal has been released by the European Council – and it could commit Ireland to austerity for the next decade.
  • Fitch ratings agency has this evening warned that it is considering downgrading Ireland and five other eurozone countries after last week’s EU deal. Italy, Spain, Belgium, Slovenia and Cyprus are all on the hitlist.
  • Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty has said he won’t be paying the  €100 household charge – but has said he wouldn’t encourage other people to follow his lead. Opposition TDs have launched a campaign for a national boycott of the controversial charge.
  • A Fine Gael TD has raised concerns that record-breaking video game Call of Duty is causing society to become desensitised to violence. A lot of readers in the comments disagreed…
  • And speaking of politics: the Irish public made ‘thousands’ of complaints to the Oireachtas this year over the conduct of TDs in the Dáil. Ceann Comhairle Seann Barrett said the high number of complaints meant it’s time that TDs “cop ourselves on”. Hear hear.
  • Brrrr, it’s cold out there. Temperatures are expected to drop to -2 degrees tonight with more snow showers expected around the country. But it’s not all bad: readers have sent in some great photos of snow in their area
  • Have you seen Facebook’s new Timeline feature yet? It’s got a mixed reaction so far…
  • You may have been following the #twitterxmassingle on Twitter, where Irish tweeters recorded their own version of Winter Song to raise money for Holles Street Hospital. The video has been released and you can see it here:

  • Sean Quinn’s wife, Patricia Quinn, has been ordered to repay a €3 million loan to the former Anglo Irish Bank which she and her husband received in 2006.
  • Remember the five dogs that were stolen from an animal sanctuary in Galway last week? There’s some good news – two of the dogs have been found.
  • The Champions League draw was made today with Arsenal to face AC Milan while Chelsea face Napoli. How do you think they’ll get on in the final 16? Vote in the poll here.
  • RTE has said that it will follow whatever recommendations the Press Ombudsman makes about what led to the station broadcasting the defamatory Prime Time Investigates prorgramme earlier this year.
  • Every Friday we like to put up an especially good Irish short film for people to check out- and this week, we went for the classic Give Up Yer Aul Sins. Remember this?
  • And finally: the Stone Roses have announced they’re going to play a gig in Dublin’s Phoenix Park next July. Here’s one of our favourite songs in anticipation…
