- The body of a 37 year old man was discovered in a house in Carrigaline in Co. Cork earlier today. The man had been shot and his body was discovered by his partner in their rented home.
- It’s emerged that Irish public finances would be €2 billion better off than they were last year if not for the cost of repairing the banking sector. Exchequer figures reveal that there’s an €18.9b deficit for the first seven months of the year, compared to €10.2b for the same time last year.
- The Health Information and Quality Authority is calling for a tracking system for medical workers and organisations. It wants to see the introduction of a central database which will see each worker assigned a unique number so they can be tracked throughout their career.

- Sticking with all matters presidential as it emerged today that former Eurovision winner and MEP Dana Rosemary Scallon could be considering joining the race for the Áras. Highland Radio cited sources close to Scallon who said she was reconsidering her earlier decision not to contest this year’s election.
- A 59-year-old man who is confined to a prison bed in the North is begging to be allowed to go home. Brendan Lillis, a former member of the IRA, suffers from a debilitating form of arthritis. His condition has been described as ‘shocking’.
- The company which operates Germany’s nationwide air traffic control service has won a court injunction to stop more than 3,000 staff from going on strike tomorrow morning. The controllers have already lodged an appeal and it’s thought there’s a long night ahead. The strike would have implications for flights across Europe.

The makers of the latter have launched their three new smartphones with touchscreen technology, hoping to make inroads into the dominance of the likes of Apple and Samsung. - An 18-year-old girl who suffered hours of anguish with what’s thought to be a bomb strapped around her neck was freed earlier and reunited with her family in Sydney. Police believe it may have been an extortion attempt, as the girl is a member of one of Australia’s wealthiest families.
- The chief executive of the Premier League has said that he wants to introduce a virtual reality-style concept to the way football matches are viewed, and has likened the experience he envisages to watching James Cameron film Avatar in 3D.
- The world’s most infamous playboy has finally been introduced to the world’s silliest craze: planking. Hugh Hefner’s new girlfriend Anna Sophia has posted a picture on Twitter with the message “I got Hef to plank”:
