• The chairwoman of the Revenue Commissioners has apologised for the distress and confusion caused by its letters to 115,000 pensioners outlining how they might be liable for extra tax this year. Josephine Feehily told an Oireachtas committee that the Revenue had learned of the discrepancies in early December, and had tried to fix it before January 1.
• Ulster Bank has refused to comment on speculation that it is about to announce hundreds of job cuts. A spokesperson for the bank this afternoon said the rumours were “speculation” and refused to comment any further.
• Over €100,000 in cash has been stolen in an armed raid on a cash-in-transit van in Co Cork. The raid occurred at 4:30pm while an ATM at a petrol station was being refilled outside Carrigaline.
• Staff at the state-owned building society EBS are to hold a second day of strike action over the institution’s withholding of a ’13th month’ payment for lower-paid staff last month. The dispute concerns whether the payment is a ‘bonus’ – management say it is, employees say it isn’t.
• In other industrial disputes, the Labour Relations Commission has invited the two sides in the Vita Cortex dispute to attend talks next week clarifying the facts of the dispute. SIPTU has taken up the invite.
• The government’s released a list of bills it expects to publish in the Spring session. There’s 26 bills on the list – but proposals for referendums on abolishing the Seanad, or the constitutional rights of the child, aren’t in there.
• The HSE insists that outpatient services at hospitals in Cavan and Monaghan will not be affected by the news that the hospitals will lose 25 per cent of their staff.
