- The Dáil is this evening beginning its debate on legislation which would permit limited access to abortion, in circumstances where the life of the mother is in “real and substantial danger”. You can watch the live stream of tonight’s debate here.
- It’s been a decent day on the jobs front – pharmaceutical company Mylan announced it would create 500 jobs in Dublin and Galway over the next five years in an investment worth over €300 million.
- Enda Kenny’s trip to Baldoyle to announce the jobs was interrupted, however: he was doorstepped by Priory Hall residents who finally secured a meeting with him, but who left disappointed and without any major commitments.
- A new report reckons private financing could help clear the backlog of people waiting for social housing. Clúid’s report says Ireland could copy a model in the UK and Canada, and the housing minister Jan O’Sullivan appears open to the idea.
- The Troika’s quarterly inspection of Dublin is ongoing – but today it emerged that the Troika turned down the opportunity to meet the Oireachtas finance committee. Michael Noonan made the invite after the Troika said they didn’t want to meet the parties given the referendum on the fiscal compact in six weeks’ time.
- Anders Behring Breivik has told his trial in Oslo that ‘the Knights Templar’ – a network of crusaders he is supposedly a member of – is “not an organisation in a conventional sense.”
- A major report published by the Commission on Credit Unions today has recommended the restructuring of Ireland’s Credit Unions. The report examined key features of credit unions in the country and investigated the financial position of the sector.
- A new embarrassment for the Pentagon: new photographs appear to show US troops posing with the bodies of dead insurgents in Afghanistan.

- For some reason – we don’t know why – there’s been an unforeseen delay in the rollout of septic tank registrations. The Department of the Environment says the €5 ‘early bird’ offer will still apply whenever registration begins.
- An emergency controller with the HSE in Dublin has been nominated for an EU award for his role in securing the rescue of an injured Irishman stranded in Greenland last May.
- Google CEO Larry Page has spent an uncomfortable day in court, answering questions in a case taken by Oracle, who reckon Google stole some of the technology from Java and used it in the Android mobile operating system.
- A registered nurse has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a woman outside a hospital in Houston, Texas yesterday.
- The Italian government – which was originally meant to get Italy’s budget back in surplus by next year – now says it’ll only balance the books by 2015.
- Political football: former Republic of Ireland international Andy Reid today offered his support for the Vita Cortex workers, who are on day 125 of their sit-in in Cork.
- RTÉ’s abandoned Prime Time Investigates series has been honoured with a posthumous global award. The ‘Ireland’s Illegal Cigarette Trade’ expose won a prize at the New York International Television and Film Awards 2012.
