Walkers rescued from Wicklow Mountains

Rescue teams carried injured woman 2.5km down mountain last night after her group became caught in descending cloud on Lugnaquillia.

TWO MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAMS, the Irish Coastguard and local farmers and foresters were involved in efforts to rescue a woman who injured her ankle while walking in the Wicklow Mountains yesterday.

The Glen of Imaal Red Cross and the Dublin & Wicklow Mountain rescue teams said that a group of four walkers had started out during clear weather, but became enveloped in descending clouds after reaching the summit of Lugnaquillia.

While attempting to walk down from the mountain, one woman stumbled and hurt her ankle.

The Coastguard helicopter was contacted, but was unable to reach the scene due to poor weather conditions.

Over 30 mountain rescue members then searched for the group of four walkers, including the injured woman, who were located at around 9pm.

Three of the group were assisted down on foot, while the injured woman was carried on a stretcher down about 2.5km of the mountains. The group reached the valley floor at around 1am today, and all parties involved in the rescue were off the mountain by 3am.
