MET ÉIREANN IS FORECASTING further snowfalls over the weekend and into next week.
The weather service says showers of hail, sleet and snow are expected to fall over Ulster, Connaught, and parts of Leinster today.
It warns that snowfall of up to 10cm is possible in parts of north Donegal and west Connaught.
Motorists are being advised to take extra care on the roads this morning, as road temperatures have fallen below zero in many parts, according to AA Roadwatch:
Heavy snowfall overnight has resulted in treacherous conditions in parts of Leinster; in particular in parts of Wexford, Wicklow, Kildare and Meath. In the west affected areas include Sligo, Mayo, Galway and further north in Donegal.
Drivers are advised to reduce their speed significantly and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.
AA Roadwatch recommends avoiding the Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap due to overnight snow, and says very icy conditions have been reported on the N11 between the Rathnew and Arklow exits.
The Road Safety Authority is urging drivers to remember to check that their tyres are suitable for icy and snowy conditions, and to ensure their lights are working.
The main runway at Dublin Airport was closed earlier on as snow was cleared away, but it has since reopened. Delays are expected to today’s flight schedule, and anyone travelling should check with their airline for details.
