CULTURE, POLITICS AND fashion trends may change over time, but in marriage, the stories stay the same. Why Women Kill is a darkly comedic drama and the latest offering from Desperate Housewives creator Marc Cherry.
Three women, living in the same Pasadena mansion across three time periods, are each coming to terms with different kinds of betrayal.
In 1963, we meet Beth Ann (Ginnifer Goodwin), a dedicated housewife whose glorious Technicolor existence is turned upside down by her husband’s infidelity. In 1984, Simone (Lucy Liu) thinks her third husband Karl might be the one, until she realises he hasn’t been entirely open about his sexuality.
And in 2019, lawyer Taylor (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) sees the lines of her open marriage blur as her husband Eli starts to show feelings for her mistress.
As the series name suggests, each discovery kickstarts a chain of events with ominous consequences. But this is not a formulaic tale of shunned women seeking revenge, as Cherry was quick to point out.
“Interestingly enough, not one person will be killed because of infidelity,” he said at a live Television Critics Awards event to promote the show last year. “Infidelity is just a starting point for this journey of self discovery.”
And while Cherry did confirm there would be plenty of murderous crimes, those crimes are “not necessarily” committed by the three female leads. “The mystery is, who’s going to kill, and why?”
If you’re a fan of true crime, dark romance – or just a sucker for 1980s power suits and vibrant post-war era florals – you’ll find lots to pique your interest in Why Women Kill.
The first episode premieres on TG4 on Tuesday October 20 at 10.30pm. Watch it live, or catch up online from Ireland for 30 days with the TG4 Player.
