THE 59TH WORLD Press Photo Contest selected its winning images today, and as you might imagine the pictures included are amazing.
With 5,775 photographers having submitted their work, the final list was whittled down to just 41.
21 countries were represented by the final shortlist.

“Hope For A New Life” – a man passes a baby through the fence at the Hungarian-Serbian border on 28 August 2015. This image is the World Press Photo of the Year.
“March Against Police Violence” - Lamon Reccord stares down a police sergeant during a protest following the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald by police in Chicago on 25 November 2015.
“Emily and Kate and Eddie and Reid” – although they hadn’t planned it, Emily and Kate got pregnant within weeks of each other through artificial insemination and in vitro fertilisation, respectively. Their sons were born within four days of each other. This photo was taken on 6 December 2015.

“Digging the Future” – a mine worker takes a smoke break before going back into the pit, 20 November 2015. Miners in Bani face harsh conditions and exposure to toxic chemicals and heavy metals.
“The Gris-gris Wrestlers of Senegal” - Kherou, a young wrestling champion, performs a ritual in the water of the sea while pouring milk over his body in order to obtain the reinforcement of a ghost who lives in the stones at the shore, 11 August 2015.
“Gang-related Violence” – the body of a victim killed in gang-related violence in San Pedro Sula, Honduras on 4 April 2015. This was the fourth gang-related killing on the same street in one night.
