WRITER AND COLUMNIST John Waters is to sue The Phoenix magazine.
Court papers lodged last week at the High Court show the beginning of proceedings between the journalist and Penfield Enterprises Ltd, the company which publishes the satirical Dublin-based magazine.
The exact nature of the proceedings is, as yet, unknown.
On 30 June, the magazine published a clarification concerning a piece which ran in its 10 March edition – in this clarification, The Phoenix confirmed that Waters had been “fully entitled to defend his good name” in previous libel actions he had pursued in the courts.
Contacted for comment, Waters declined to speak on the matter. His solicitor, Tony Collier, likewise declined to comment.
A spokesperson for The Phoenix also said they would not discuss the lawsuit, which was officially lodged last Wednesday.
62-year-old Waters has been one of Ireland’s most prominent journalists and social commentators for many years.
Starting off with Hot Press and Magill Magazine in the 1980s, he wrote a Friday column for the Irish Times for 24 years before leaving the paper in early 2014.
The Phoenix has been published on a mostly fortnightly basis since 1983.
