That seems to be what the Journal are implying. My opinion is that this is poor quality stuff from the Journal, tabloids don’t even engage in. ‘He acts funny, let’s have a laugh’ etc etc I mean, who cares if he points, holds his hand out etc…. His politics and how he governs this state is all the man should be judged on.

John, we’ve run more than 30 articles about Enda Kenny and the promissory note deal in the last two days (you can see them all here), not to mention the fact that we run numerous articles every week about what the Taoiseach says and does in the Dáil (and outside it) – you can see some of them here. This is just a light article on a Friday evening, nothing more – at a guess, I’d say we run thirty or so serious articles about the Taoiseach for every lighter one.

I don’t want to sound like a hardass or anything but I just don’t think it’s representative of the way we cover the Taoiseach to say that articles about him are always silly photos or something, when 95% of the articles about him are serious.

We’re not poking fun at him. The photo is funny because of the way he’s doing something completely different to the four other leaders in the photograph. That’s it. Something can be funny without anyone being mocked.

Enda should cancel property tax and water charges now that they have a billion more a year these charges are going to cripple people we just can not afford another bill

Come off it, that’s nonsense. You’re telling me ’14 photos of Enda pointing at things’ at the bottom of you post, or the one about the old Nokia he owned, aren’t mocking the mans mannerisms/taste? Its play ground bully stuff, ‘he’s different, lets giggle’. Your experience should also tell you that such articles would trigger a tsunami of personalized attacks (from mostly anonymous posters).

Again, as a journalist how you can justify poking fun at the mans appearance, mannerisms or tastes?

He represents a nation so, like it or not, his image is something he should be concerned with, as should we (to a reasonable degree) but this article isn’t doing that. If I mocked his First Communion haircut, that would be mean and unfair. This isn’t.

Anyway, it’s Friday, I’m off to look at photos of cats. Or better yet, photos of Enda calling cats on his old Nokia while pointing at other cats.

I have one Niall, perhaps you should learn to tolerate other peoples opinions, it might make yours fuller.

@John Foody: That’s exactly what I’m telling you. There are about a million other websites/memes which actually DO post things mocking Enda Kenny’s mannerisms – everything from his accent to the way he looks. There’s a huge gulf between doing that and posting a silly photograph of him laughing, which doesn’t even make any mention of his “mannerisms or tastes” as you put it. You’re making a jump which just doesn’t make any sense.

Lots of other people have remarked on Enda Kenny pointing at things. He does it all the time. He jokes about it himself and he does it for a reason – it’s a good way to get attention in a photograph and look pro-active and engaged. It’s not being mean or a bully to publish one such photograph and frankly your insinuation is insulting.

I suspect we’re going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I fundamentally disagree with the way you’re interpreting this photograph and I suspect you feel the same way about what I have to say.

I don’t think I’m making a ‘jump’. You posted the picture of him pointing AND requested comments. You got a load of witty comments below slagging the man off, as you must have expected. Some hilarious some offensive, very few about the mans politics or in/abilities as a leader.

I did’t mean to offend you or imply you’re a bully. I just find these kind of things a bit tasteless is all. Perhaps I’m on the wrong site then, I’ll get my coat.

Hey John, I don’t think anyone’s trying to belittle the politics or crise du jour but we’re in such an awfully dire situation that sometime you need something silly to just… I don’t want to say “lighten the mood” but give some relief to our current predicament. The Journal is a very well balanced source of political facts and discourse (in my opinion, anyway) so I appreciate the odd lighthearted article. We need some these days.
