Russian fighter jets intercepted by US near Alaska

The warplanes intercepted the jets on Wednesday.

TWO RUSSIAN MIG 35 fighter jets entered a US “air defence identification zone” on Wednesday and were intercepted by American warplanes near Alaska, two US defence officials said.

Although Russian aircraft have entered the zone previously it was “the first time in a long time” that fighter jets passed through the area, a defence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

The Russian planes, which also included two refueling tankers and two long-range bombers, left the area without incident, he said.
