At least four people are believed to have died after police stormed a makeshift protest camp at Pearl Square.

ESCALATING PROTESTS IN BAHRAIN were countered by riot police firing tear gas and rubber bullets as officers stormed a makeshift protest camp in a pre-dawn raid this morning.

Tanks also appeared on the streets, as police pushed demonstrators from their Pearl Square encampment.

At least four people are believed to have died in clashes with security forces today, the AP reports, as protesters continue to call for political reform and the resignation of the island nation’s Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa.

The Bahraini interior minister had apologised earlier for the deaths of two protesters at the start of the week, and the king made a rare television appearance to say an investigation would be launched into the deaths.

The Wall Street Journal reports that as the protest grows, people are increasingly calling for greater political reform by urging the ruling Sunni minority to step down from prime leadership posts.
