1. #EMIGRATION: Ten people emigrate from Ireland every hour according to new figures released by the Central Statistics Office today. In total 89,000 people left the country in the year to April.

2. #SYRIA: As the British parliament debates possible intervention in Syria and sends fighter jets to the region, France has said it is ready to commit forces. But the UN has said that chemical weapons inspectors will continue their work in Damascus until Saturday.

3. #YEWTREE: Entertainer Rolf Harris has been charged with nine counts of indecent assault and four counts of making indecent images of children. He is due to appear in court towards the end of September.

4. #TURKEY: The trial of two men accused of murdering two women from Co Down two years ago has been adjourned until 9 September. Erup Cetin and his son Recep Cetin, are charged with the murder of friends Marion Graham and Cathy Dinsmore whose family had been hoping for a verdict today.

5. #SELF-DEFENCE: Finally, a report that Cork City Council’s plans to spend €50,000 on self-defence classes for staff is wide of the mark. The training will only apply to a small number of frontline staff, the council claims.
