The 9 at 9 IFAC criticises Government spending plans, Trump orders more troops to LA and new rental regulations going to Cabinet.

LAST UPDATE | 10 Jun 2025

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know as you start the day.

Government spending

1. The Government’s fiscal plans “lack credibility”, the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council has warned, as the Department of Public Expenditure has failed to turn over its monthly spending profiles to allow the council to forecast beyond 2026.

The council released its latest assessment report, which states that despite the strength of Ireland’s economy and financial surpluses, without these factors, there is a structural deficit of 2.4% of gross national income.

Rent Pressure Zones

2. A reform of rent regulations is set to go to Cabinet today, which will allow landlords to reset rent between tenancies.

Under the proposal, rents for existing tenants in the entire country will be brought under control under the current Rent Pressure Zone system that is currently in place.

Justice Committee

3. At least one driver was arrested every hour for drink or drug driving offences in 2024, according to Garda Commissioner Drew Harris.

Harris is due to appear before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice this afternoon, where he is expected to address garda recruitment, community safety, roads policing, and organisational changes within the force.

Madleen

4. Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg and other activists detained aboard a Gaza-bound aid boat have been taken to a Tel Aviv airport for deportation, Israel has said, after naval forces intercepted their vessel.

Los Angeles

5. US President Donald Trump has ordered 700 active-duty US Marines and 2,000 more National Guard troops into Los Angeles, vowing those protesting immigration arrests would be “hit harder” than ever.

Air Corps crisis

6. The Tánaiste is to bring to cabinet an emergency measure to solve the military air traffic control service crisis by offering a payment scheme to the controllers to keep them in service, The Journal has learned.

Ukraine

7. One person was killed and a maternity hospital was struck after Russia carried out “massive” drone attacks on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and port city Odesa early this morning, officials said.

Tariffs

8. Cabinet will hear today that potential European tariffs on American-made goods and the possible impact they could have on the Irish economy are a cause of concern for the government.

Terrorism offences

9. Separately, Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan will seek Cabinet approval this morning for a bill that would add three new terrorist offences to existing law.
