Off to the Áras

1. This afternoon Micheál Martin will become the next Taoiseach of Ireland. A new Cabinet will also be formed today, with speculation rife about who might be getting moved up the political ladder. 

It will be a busy day in Leinster House, but The Journal will be bringing you all the latest as it happens throughout the day. 

Storm Éowyn

2. A Status Orange wind warning has been issued for the country this coming Friday.

Met Éireann has warned that Storm Éowyn will bring “damaging and destructive” gale force winds with gusts of up to 130km/h.

Washington DC

3. President Donald Trump called a Washington bishop “nasty” and demanded an apology, after she told the US president from the pulpit that he was sowing fear among the country’s immigrants and LGBTQ people.

“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Fog warning

4. A status Yellow fog warning has kicked in across the country for twenty-one counties, including parts of Northern Ireland. 

Ballinclamper beach

5. The public have been advised to stay clear of a whale carcass which washed ashore near Dungarvan, Co Waterford yesterday.

The roughly 20-metre-long fin whale was discovered by locals at Ballinclamper Beach, with the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) and Waterford County Council called in to investigate.

Limerick city

6. The body of a man suspected of having falsely imprisoned and assaulted two women in Limerick was found yesterday.

The man, aged in his 50s, and from Ireland, was found dead on the outskirts of Limerick City.

Turkey

7. At least 76 people have died after a major fire broke out at a ski resort in northwestern Turkey overnight, the interior minister has confirmed.

Turkish authorities detained four suspects including the owner of the hotel at a popular holiday resort in northwest Turkey following the deadly fire. 

Howth

8. Volunteers from the RNLI branches in Howth and Skerries came to the aid of a fishing boat that had hit rocks along the coast of north Co Dublin yesterday, rescuing one person and managing to save the vessel. 

Champions League

9. Harvey Elliott’s first Champions League goal in over two years secured a seventh successive Champions League victory for Liverpool, but the guarantee of top spot was frustratingly denied them by a late Barcelona goal in Lisbon.
