Take a virtual tour through this modern Kilkenny haven

You asked for a video tour of Ally’s beautiful self-build and now it’s here.

Journal Media Studio / YouTube

LAST MONTH, YOU got to choose between two gorgeous Kilkenny homes, and Ally’s modern self-build came out on top.

The striking black external cladding of this home immediately draws the eye, so perhaps it’s no surprise that you voted to see more in our video tour.

As our winner for March, A House By The Fairway will be entered into the final vote at the end of the year alongside our other monthly winners, as voted by you, with a chance to win a very special prize.

Ally kindly sat down with us to tell us how she brought her vision to life.

Tell us a bit about yourself and how long you’ve been living here.

I’m Ally, a teacher and I’ve always loved interiors and making a space feel like home. We moved in in December 2022, so we’ve had a bit of time now to really settle in and enjoy our new home.

How long did the whole build or renovation take?

From start to finish the build took about 15 months Like most builds it had its moments, but looking back now it was completely worth it.

What inspired the overall look and feel of your home?

I wanted something that felt calm, modern, and timeless. Nothing too trend-led, just a space that would still feel right years from now, with lots of natural textures and light.

Do you have a favourite spot in the house?

Definitely the kitchen. It’s where everything happens; it’s bright, open, and just feels really comfortable.

Did you work with any suppliers or use any materials you loved?

We tried to keep things quite considered and chose materials that would last. A mix of natural finishes like wood and stone, and we worked with some great suppliers along the way.

Were there any places or styles that influenced your home?

Travel definitely played a part. I’ve always been drawn to spaces that feel simple but really well thought out, and that definitely influenced how everything came together.

What were the biggest design decisions you made?

Getting the layout right was a big one, making sure the space flowed properly. We also focused a lot on storage and keeping things practical while still looking good.

Is there anything you’re especially proud of?

Honestly, it’s the little details. The finishes, the joinery, even the hardware. They all add up and make the space feel really considered.

Did sustainability or smart tech come into it?

Yeah, it was definitely something we thought about. We tried to make good choices in terms of energy and materials, and added a few smart features to make day-to-day life easier.

What surprised you most during the process?

How many decisions there are, even the small ones. You don’t realise it until you’re in it, but every little choice matters.

Now that it’s done, does it feel like what you imagined?

It actually turned out better than I expected. It feels more finished and pulled together than I had pictured at the start. I am so proud and excited to bring our family up in this home.

Why do you think your home should win the Allianz Amazing Home of the Year?

Honestly, I don’t expect to win. It just feels really special to be part of it, to even be considered, and to make it to the final. That in itself has been such a lovely experience, and we’re just really grateful to be included alongside so many amazing homes.
