11-month-old dies when grandparents leave him in car for two hours
Temperatures in the car could have reached 78 degrees Celsius.
AN 11-MONTH-OLD BABY boy died in Georgia over the weekend when his grandparents left him in a car for two hours.
Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson told CNN early indications are that the death was accidental but added: “We are keeping an open mind.”
Jaxon Taylor’s grandparents were looking after him while his mother Mandie Hendershot, a nurse who was working a night shift, slept.
According to Wilson, Kyle and Meta Hendershot took Jaxon to church along with other family members.
Some time after they returned home, Jaxon’s mother woke up and asked where he was.
This was around 3pm, when temperatures hit 90 degrees (32 degrees Celsius).
“Temperature in a closed vehicle can reach as high as 131 (55 C) to 172 (78 C) degrees in as little as 15 minutes,” Wilson said.
He added there was a lack of communication between the adults present, stating:
It appears that there were other things on their mind … They assumed that one of the others had brought in the child and laid him down.
Jaxon’s mother and first responders attempted to revive the child with CPR, but he was pronounced dead at hospital.
Hendershot took to Facebook to express her heartbreak, saying: “My mind is reeling with this horror.”
Jaxon is the the 19th child to die in the US in 2015 because of being left inside a hot car, according to the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at San Jose State University in California.
