*According to TripAdvisor.

THE LITTLE MUSEUM in Dublin has been named Ireland’s best museum by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site.

The non-profit museum, located on Stephen’s Green, opened on Culture Night 2011 and celebrates its fourth birthday today.

The traveller’s choice award comes at the end of a record-breaking season for the museum, where visitor numbers grew from 24,248 in 2012 to 80,601 in 2014. More than 100,000 visitors are expected this year.

Welcoming the news, Little Museum director Trevor White said: “TripAdvisor is like a bossy head boy who keeps saying how much he admires you, even as he’s giving you a wedgie in front of the whole school. To avoid his attacks you just have to be perfect all the time. It’s quite the education.”

Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor, said the travellers’ choice awards recognise “the favourite museums that serve as cultural treasure troves for our community of millions”, adding: These world-class museums provide an enriching experience that can be both inspiring and educational for travelers around the globe.”

The other museums rounding out the top five are:

2. Croke Park Stadium Tour and GAA Museum (Dublin)
3. National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology (Dublin)
4. Derryglad Folk and Heritage Museum (Athlone)
5. Irish Whiskey Museum (Dublin)
