U2 singer launches World Aids Day as 80 world landmarks bathed in red to mark campaign.
BONO LED THE calls on World Aids Day to find an end to “this dreadful little virus called HIV/AIDS”. The U2 frontman and his bandmates Adam Clayton and the Edge helped Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard to turn the Sydney Opera House red to mark today’s campaign day.
He also pledged his support to the bid to end mother-to-child transmission of the virus by 2015. He said:
This is a great night, it’s not a small night, it’s a historic night and I would like to end it by prophesying that we will, soon coming, see an end to this dreadful little virus called HIV/AIDS. We will definitely, by 2015, see the first HIV-free generation in 20 years.
Around 80 landmarks across 13 countries, including Trafalgar Square’s fountains in London and the Empire State Building in New York, were illuminated in the colour red to remind people of the AIDS charity (RED).
