Man arrested over murder of young football coach on night out

Conan Anderson died on Saturday, after sustaining head injuries some weeks ago.

DETECTIVES IN THE North investigating the murder of 22-year-old Conan Anderson in Belfast have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the crime.

Anderson had been out in the Arthur’s Lane area of Belfast on Sunday 5 February and returned home the following morning at about 7.30am.

Later on that day he began to feel unwell and was admitted to hospital with serious head injuries on the evening of Monday 6 February.

The matter was reported to police on Wednesday 8 February and enquiries established that an incident had occurred in the early hours of Monday morning that led to his injuries.

A 27-year-old man had been arrested in north Belfast on 9 February on suspicion of grievous bodily harm but was later released pending further enquiries.

Anderson had remained in a critical condition and died from his injuries on Saturday 25 February.

The PSNI launched a murder investigation the following day.

Friends of the young man said he coached a children’s football team in the area.

The PSNI said in a statement: “The 26-year-old was arrested in the Belfast area this morning and is currently helping police with their enquiries.

I would continue to appeal to anyone with any information or anyone who was in the Upper Arthur Street, Montgomery Street and Arthur Lane area on Monday 6th February around 5:30am who may have information which could be of assistance to my investigation to contact detectives at Musgrave Street quoting reference number 1034 08/02/17.
