Consultant may sue government over Roscommon hospital stats
A consultant believes his professional reputation has been damaged, as a protest is planned at a GAA match.
A CONSULTANT DOCTOR from Roscommon General Hospital is considering launching a legal action against the government over what he claims are inaccurate statistics about the hospital’s mortality rate, the Sunday Business Post reports.
Health minister Dr James Reilly claimed that the mortality rate for people admitted to the hospital suffering from heart attacks was 21.3 per cent – four times higher than that of University College Hospital in Galway.
The Roscommon Hospital Action Committee says the hospital’s mortality rate was in line with other hospitals – and that one consultant says his professional reputation may have been damaged as a result.
The committee is also considering legal action over the decision to close the hospital, telling the paper it is considering whether to take action in the Irish or European courts.
A peaceful demonstration against the closure of the hospital’s A&E facility, which was replaced last Monday with a limited-hours urgent care unit, is planned for the Connacht senior football final which takes place at Roscommon’s Dr Hyde Park today.
Despite the participation of Mayo in the final, Taoiseach Enda Kenny will not be attending the clash against Roscommon – saying he is instead visiting his children at an Irish language college, having not seen them for three weeks.
