Crash kills woman after car seen driving wrong way up M6

The collision happened yesterday hours before another road user was killed in Cork.

A WOMAN IN her 60s was killed yesterday on the M6 motorway, shortly after a car was seen driving the wrong way along the road.

The car driven by the woman hit another vehicle at around 2.30pm between Moate and Athlone, Co Westmeath. The driver of the second car, a woman in her 30s, was seriously injured and taken to Tullamore General Hospital. Her condition is described as stable.

In a statement, gardaí said that a car had been spotted driving east along the westbound carriageway before the accident.

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old man was fatally injured when his motorcycle collided with a car at Gurranes, Innishannon, Co Cork. He was pronounced dead at the scene after the accident around 8.30pm, while the other driver was treated for minor injuries at Cork University Hospital. The Kilumney to Crossbarry road remained closed to traffic this morning.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to either crash to contact the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
