ONE MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED in Italy after the car he was driving struck a group of cyclists head-on, killing at least seven of them.
Four people and the driver were injured in the incident. The driver’s injuries are not serious.
Police said the driver had been smoking marijuana, according to the Guardian.
His car struck the cyclists, who were travelling in the opposite direction, as it attempted to overtake another car. The car was going above the speed limit, according to police, and visibility and driving conditions were good at the time.
Italian news agency ANSA reports that the driver said he braked when he saw the cyclists, but lost control of the car because the road was wet.
The PA reports that seven people were killed at the scene, and another person died later from their injuries.
