• A 38-year-old woman was killed this morning in Sligo after a fire broke out shortly before 6am; there were no other people present in the house at the time.
• The CIA has briefed the leaders of the United States about the possibility of three men having come to the country with plans to carry out a terrorist attack, says Vice President Joe Biden. Intelligence allegedly suggests that terrorists may have been planning a series of car bombings – with bridges or tunnels as potential targets – in New York City or Washington DC.
• A six-year-old Irish girl has been abducted in Cyprus, where she lives with her mother. May Assad Monaghan, originally from Swords, Co Dublin, is believed to have gone missing near her home in Limassol on Wednesday. TheJournal.ie has learned that the focus of the police investigation is a person known to May.
• The British Army has suspended additional soldiers following the Baha Mousa inquiry. Meanwhile, the British Ministry of Defence has said that more damning evidence could lead to further prosecutions in other Iraqi abuse cases.
• This Sunday marks the six-month anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that killed tens of thousands in Japan - see our gallery of the ongoing repairs.
• JobBridge: there have been good arguments for and against the scheme, which was set up to offer social welfare recipients the opportunity to gain internship experience in exchange for an additional €50 on top of their welfare payments. It has come under fire in recent weeks, however, with some employers being accused of exploiting the unemployed. Today, we take a look at some more of the “intern” positions being advertised through the Government’s National Internship Scheme.
