Death toll rises to 26 in Japan earthquake disaster

AT LEAST 26 people have now been reported dead in today’s 8.9 magnitude earthquake, which struck off the northeast coast, sparking a massive tsunami, according to Japan’s meterological agency. Three of the dead were crushed to death when their houses collapsed in Ibaraki prefecture, Al Jazeera reports.

Emergency services are fighting at least 44 fires across the country.

Meanwhile, a small tsunami is expected to hit Indonesia in the next hour. More to come.
