THE LATEST FIGURES released by the Central Statistics Office show that the drop in visitors from Britain has slowed.
The number of tourists from Great Britain plummeted by 20% between June 2008 and 2009. Britain has traditionally been Ireland’s biggest tourist group.
Visitors numbers from Britain fell by just 3% for the last year, signalling that the level of decline has slowed.
However, the total number of trips to Ireland fell by 5.7% between June 2009 and 2010, with a significant fall in traffic from European countries.
More visitors came from America and ‘other areas’ over the past year, with an increase of 1.4% and 4.1% respectively.
Irish holiday makers are increasingly making do in Ireland as 7.4% less visitors took their holidays abroad last year, which works out at 52,700 fewer overseas trips.
The figures are based on traffic numbers for direct flights through the nine Irish airports.
