Fun and simple activities to entertain the family this Easter

From decorating to celebrating, bring some Easter magic into your home.

THE DAYS ARE getting longer, the weather is getting warmer (just about), and everyone seems to have a little more energy. Make the most of it with quality time with the kids. Easter is the perfect time for making lovely memories, so we’ve put together lots of activities to entertain the whole family this holiday. Pace yourself, there’s a lot to get through! Pick a few things to do and remember you have the whole Easter holidays, it doesn’t all need to be done before Easter Sunday. So let’s start with a classic…

Decorate with Egg Painting

Egg painting is a classic Easter activity that both kids and adults can enjoy. Use hard-boiled eggs and let your creativity flow with paints, markers, or get back to basics with natural dyes from ingredients like beetroot or turmeric. Go a step further and grab small tree branches from the garden to make an egg tree. Once dried, hang your colourful eggs using ribbons to add a festive touch to your home.

Or if you prefer to show the world your creation, turn it into a wreath and make your neighbours jealous by hanging it on your front door.

Alternatively, check out this gorgeous dainty egg-painting kit from Irish store Art & Hobby. It does a great job of containing the mess with only one paint brush that can be dropped at a time!

Explore an Easter Trail

Hop over to Collins Barracks over the midterm for a free, family-friendly Easter Trail. Designed for children and families, the self-guided trail invites participants to solve riddles, find hidden artefacts, and discover more at the National Museum of Ireland’s fascinating collections. Adults and children alike will enjoy diving into bite-sized pieces of Irish history.

Running from Monday, 14th April to Sunday, 27th, the trail is packed with engaging brain teasers to enjoy at your own pace. A little learning over the break will keep those brains buzzing!

 Bake Hot Cross Buns

While Easter is often synonymous with chocolate, why not mix it up by baking some delicious hot cross buns? These spiced, sweet buns are a traditional treat, and making them from scratch can be a fun family activity.

To make a simple batch…

Mix 500g plain flour

50g caster sugar

2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

2 tsp instant yeast

Warm 350ml milk,

Then stir in 1 beaten egg and 50g melted butter

Combine with the dry ingredients along with 100g mixed dried fruit

Knead until smooth, cover, and let rise for about an hour

Divide into 12 buns, place on a baking tray, and pipe a flour-and-water paste cross on top

Bake at 190°C (fan 170°C) for 20 minutes, then brush with a glaze made from 2 tbsp sugar dissolved in 2 tbsp boiling water

Serve them warm with butter for a comforting snack—or give them a modern twist by adding crispy bacon and turning them into a breakfast butty. It’s a fresh take on the usual Easter fry-up.

Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt

No Easter celebration is complete without an egg hunt! Whether you’re indoors or outdoors, it’s easy to set up a memorable one. Start by gathering your goodies—chocolate eggs, small toys, stickers, or even little notes with clues. Choose hiding spots around the house or garden—some easy, some a bit trickier to keep things exciting. For younger kids, simply scatter the eggs around and let them explore freely. For older children, up the fun by creating rhyming riddles or a simple treasure map that leads them from clue to clue, eventually revealing a bigger prize at the end. Adults might even get involved too.

Follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the eggs – fill plastic eggs with goodies, or wrap treats in colourful foil. Make one the Prize Egg and wrap in gold foil.

  2. Write clues – if doing a riddle version, number your clues and place each one at a different location leading to the next. Coming up with the riddles is part of the fun but to kick off here’s an example “I’m cold inside, I hum all day,
Find your treat where leftovers stay!” Can you guess where?

  3. Hide the eggs – indoors, think behind cushions, under tables, inside shoes or (hint hint) the fridge! But outside garden ornaments are ideal, under plant pots, try bushes, maybe one can hang from a tree?

  4. Give them baskets or bags – something festive to collect their finds. It’s giving Halloween all over again!

  5. Start the hunt! – You can time it for some friendly competition or let everyone go at their own pace. If you have a whistle or blow horn for added drama, throw it in.

This is a must-do for creating magical childhood memories, and it’s just as much fun for the adults watching as it is for the kids searching. Plus, it’s a great way to burn off some of that chocolate-fuelled energy!

Visit a real-life Easter Bunny

Newgrange Farm is hosting its famous Easter Eggstravaganza – a weekend full of fun activities for all ages. Go along and enjoy the festive fun and games: hook a duck, hunt for the Easter Bunny or sign up to the creative Easter Bonnet competition (back by popular demand) with great prizes to be won. There’s no better place than a petting zoo at this time of year, where the kiddos get to be up close to the magic of Spring: Cuddling chicks, snuggling rabbits and feeding lambs, this special event will sell out so be sure to book in advance.

Chocolate Factory

Come Easter Monday, there’s usually an abundance of chocolate lying around. Instead of letting it go to waste, make the most of it with a yummy chocolate biscuit cake. Melt down all the leftover eggs, crush your biscuits and mix before popping into a bread tin in the fridge. The best bit is that after you slice it up, it freezes really well – you might need a break from the treats for a while!
