Four die in separate car crashes

Four people have died in separate road accidents over the weekend, as Irish Road Safety Week starts.

FOUR PEOPLE HAVE died in separate road accidents in counties Kilkenny, Dublin, Cavan and Offaly, RTÉ reports.

On Sunday, a pedestrian in his 20s was struck by a car at about 6am on the Waterford Road in Kilkenny. He was later pronounced dead at St Luke’s Hospital.

The Waterford Road has been closed off for technical examination and diversions are in place.

In Co Dublin, a 22-year-old male driver died after a crash on the N7 near Rathcoole at about 1.15am on Sunday morning. The man’s passenger and the driver of the other car were also taken to Tallaght Hospital with injuries.

In Cavan an 18-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the N55 at Kilcogy, just after midnight. The passenger in the car, a 16-year-old male, is reported to be in a critical condition in Cavan General Hospital.

On Saturday, a 74-year-old woman died after a crash at Kennedy’s Cross on the Birr to Tullamore road in Co Offaly at around 10.30pm. It is believed that a car and a bus were involved in the collision.

The deaths bring the number of people dying on Irish roads this year to 163, which is 22 below last year, according to RTÉ.

Irish Road Safety Week takes place from 11 – 17 October.
