Man arrested over fatal Galway hit-and-run

The man, who is in his 20s, was taken to Loughrea Garda Station.

A MAN HAS been arrested over the death of a man in a suspected hit-and-run on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at 8.30pm when a man in his 60s was struck by a car near a set of pedestrian lights on the Gort Road.

The victim was on a bicycle and the offending vehicle was thought to be a blue BMW. The driver left the scene and gardaí launched an appeal for people who may have seen the car.

The injured cyclist was taken to University College Hospital Galway, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2am yesterday.

The cyclist was later named as 68-year-old John White of St Laurences Field, Loughrea.

Gardaí investigating the fatal traffic collision arrested a man in his 20s this morning.

He is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Loughrea Garda Station and can be detained for up to 24 hours.
