Gardaí and Customs seize €10m worth of cannabis in County Louth operation

The seizure was made by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and customs officers.

GARDAÍ HAVE SEIZED €10.12m euros worth of cannabis in a joint operation with Revenue Customs in County Louth. 

The seizure of the drugs, in vacuum packed plastic blocks, occurred yesterday and was led by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and customs officers. 

It is understood three men, two from West Dublin and one from Drogheda, have been detained on drug trafficking offences. 

A garda statement said that the seizure was part of the force’s Operation Tara. 

“This operation involved the search of a premises in the Co. Louth area and resulted in the seizure of 506kgs of Cannabis, with an estimated value of €10,120,000.

“Three males, two in their 30’s and one in his 50’s, were arrested pursuant to Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 in relation to facilitating and enhancing drug trafficking activities for an organised crime group.

“They are currently detained, pursuant to the provisions of Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007, at Garda stations in Counties Louth and Dublin. Investigations are ongoing,” the statement read. 

The Section 50 power of detention deals specifically with organised crime groups and the suspects can be held for a maximum of seven days.
