An announcement by leading gardaí intends to discourage risky road behaviour by making it ‘culturally unacceptable’.
A SENIOR GARDA has urged the public to report dangerous driving behaviour following a high number of road fatalities last year.
Between 1 December and 5 January, almost 10,000 checkpoints resulted in 765 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Nearly 1,700 Fixed Charge Notices were issued for mobile phone use while driving and around 26,500 drivers were detected for speeding offences.
Chief Superintendent David Harrington said that if a person witnesses a potential offence taking place, they should contact gardaí.
“We must make risky behaviour on the roads unacceptable – culturally unacceptable, socially unacceptable,” Harrington said.
