Measles: 81 cases and 13 outbreaks confirmed in Ireland so far this year

The outbreaks occurred in private households, schools or residential institutions, within a community or in a hospital.

EIGHTY-ONE MEASLES cases have been confirmed in Ireland to date this year, according to the latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

Of the 81 confirmed cases, 38 are males, 40 are females and the gender was not recorded for three cases.

Thirteen outbreaks – where two or more confirmed cases are related – have occurred so far in 2024.

The outbreaks occurred in private households, schools or residential institutions, within a community or in a hospital. There were between two and 12 confirmed cases in each outbreak.

In addition to the confirmed cases above, there are 13 cases of suspected measles currently under investigation.

Each suspected case of measles needs to be tested in a laboratory before being confirmed as measles or denotified.

Symptoms

Measles is a highly infectious disease that can cause serious complications, particularly in children under one year of age, pregnant women, and the immunosuppressed.

It typically starts with cold-like symptoms that develop about 10 days after a person gets infected. The person will get a rash a few days later.

Symptoms include:

  • Cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing and a cough
  • Sore red eyes
  • A temperature of 38 degrees celsius or above
  • A rash, which usually appear on the head and neck before spreading to the rest of the body

The illness usually lasts for seven to 10 days. You can read more in our explainer on the disease here.

Vaccine

A new MMR (measles, mumps and rubella vaccine) catch-up vaccination programme was rolled out earlier this year.

Some 310,000 people are eligible for the vaccine under the programme which is estimated to cost €4.6 million. The vaccines are being administered by GPs and HSE vaccination teams.

Under the new programme, children and young adults not already vaccinated are being prioritised for vaccination.

The next priority group is healthcare workers, followed by underserved groups such as homeless people, refugees and international protection applicants.

@SYaxJ2Ts: it’s not advice. It’s a man on the internet using caps lock thinking it’ll make people will listen to his rant.

@SYaxJ2Ts: As are you. How many people do you think will see Sean’s little rant as suddenly they wow let’s listen to that stranger on the internet and will run out and get the vaccines?. The Vaccines the vast majority have already received when they were toddlers and in primary school. How many times do we need the same vaccine?

@Ger Whelan: yes I understand this. But this is a comment section, so why not use it to vent frustration in his plea? At least it’s not misinformation

@Ger Whelan: I find it interesting that RFK Jnr. was raising so much alarm about a sudden rise in autism diagnoses from a specific year, when the clinical criteria for the diagnosing autism was expanded from that specific year. What is causing so much harm is people like RFK Jnr. either ignoring, or being ignorant of, important and easily checkable information like that. Instead of being able to apply himself to do some really basic research, he instead started spouting on about vaccines causing a rapid and alarming spike in autism…..which makes him either a cynical opportunist exploiting public fear, or just someone who can’t do fundamental adult things like thinking coherently.

It’s no surprise considering peoples immune systems have been compromised…its why we are having record excess deaths and levels of sickness in this country….media and government don’t want to know tho.

@Dere: It’s because vaccination rates for measles have dropped off compared to what they were before the pandemic……. You’re right Re the immune systems though, was just at the GP and they said they’re loads of stuff going around that you wouldn’t usually see this time of year!

MMR vaccinations, BCG etc are all very important vaccinations and should be availed of by all. These are serious illnesses that can result in infertility and other negative outcomes.
Rather than blaming misinformation in your latest “debunked gotcha” article, maybe it is time to admit that the covid vaccine was unnecessary for the vast majority of society, who were no more in danger than they were from the common cold.
The forced vaccination to take part in society here (cinemas, restaurants, etc), fed the conspiracy theorists and has damaged all vaccination programmes.

@James Groden: You make a good point until you fell into the “conspiracy theorists” label trap, Right think people questioned the wisdom and group think the World Health Origination was imposing, while pushing a un tested injection with then unknow side effects. All the Best.
