Irish abroad encouraged to contribute to diaspora strategy through first ever Global Irish Survey

A Government spokesperson said the survey will allow all members of the diaspora, and those who have recently returned home, to contribute to the new strategy.

THE IRISH DIASPORA abroad are being encouraged to have their say in the new diaspora strategy through the first ever Global Irish survey.

The Programme for Government included a pledge to develop a new strategy to “ensure that the new generation and profile of emigrants are aware of and can access support overseas and develop our international diaspora networks using online and data-based initiatives”.

To that end, the Government has launched the Global Irish survey to allow all members of the diaspora, and those who have recently returned home, to contribute to the new strategy.

The survey can be found here and is open until the end of August.

It takes less than 10 minutes to complete and is a mix of multi-choice questions and spaces for more considered responses on key issues.

All the data supplied is anonymous and nothing personal is requested.

The survey will also form the baseline for future surveys, with the intention to roll out the survey on a regular basis to build up a picture of interests and issues deemed important by Irish communities overseas.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is undertaking the consultation and Tánaiste Simon  remarked: “Everywhere I travel, I have the opportunity to meet Irish citizens and those with an affinity for our country.

“I am always inspired by the contribution they have made to their new homeland as well as their willingness to work with me to strengthen ties with Ireland.”

He added that work has begin on the new diaspora strategy in line with the commitment set out in the Programme for Government.

“Our priority is to ensure our relationship with the global Irish communities is a dynamic one that meets their needs and can also adapt to evolving circumstances,” said Harris.

The last diaspora strategy was launched in 2020 and Harris said that both Ireland and the world have “changed significantly”.

He said he wants to hear from “as many voices as possible so we can deliver a programme that supports our modern and diverse global Irish family”.

He said the first ever Global Irish Survey will provide a platform for all the diaspora, including those who have recently returned home, to share their views on what is important for them and their community over the next five years.

A series of consultations is also taking place with Irish community groups and other stakeholders across the world and in Ireland.

“The response to our engagements has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Harris, “so I would encourage all our diaspora to join the survey.

“Your insights will help shape our new strategy.”
