The man is understood to have been a film student in Dublin. The nationality of his companion is currently unknown.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it is aware of this case and is providing consular assistance.

“As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”
