FIVE IRISHMEN INCLUDING media tycoon Denis O’Brien and the financier Dermot Desmond have made the annual Forbes Rich List which is once again topped by the Mexican telecoms mogul Carlos Slim.

O’Brien – who owns the mobile firm Digicel as well as the media company Communicorp – is ranked 233rd on the list with a net worth of $5.2 billion (€4 billion).

The 54-year-old is second to Pallonji Mistry, an 83-year-old construction magnate, who is Ireland’s richest citizen with a net worth of $10.5 billion (€8 billion) putting him 103rd overall, down from 96th last year.

Little is known about the man known as the ‘Phantom of Bombay House’ who is married to the Irish born Pat Perin Dubash.

The next Irishman on the list is John Dorrance III, the man behind Campbell Soup, who has a net worth of $2.4 billion (€1.8 billion). The 69-year-old has dropped from 521st place to 613th this year.

The next Irishman on the list is Martin Naughton – who is involved in heating equipment – and is 736th in the list with a net worth of $2 billion (€1.5 billion). The 73-year-old has dropped from 634th last year despite his net worth rising.

Desmond is 831st – the only Irish person to rise, up from 854th in 2012 – with a net worth of $1.8 billion (€1.4 billion).

Slim once again tops the list for the fourth year in a row with the 73-year-old having an estimated net worth $73 billion. He is trailed by Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft who has a net worth of $67 billion.

Last year’s third-placed billionaire, Warren Buffett, has been pushed into fourth - with a net worth €53.5 billion – by the increasing wealth of Amancio Ortega whose $57 billion net worth has been amassed through the popularity of his Zara fashion brand.
