Watch: An emotional Jon Stewart announces he's quitting The Daily Show

“This show doesn’t deserve and easy slightly restless host, and neither do you,” he said — tearing up slightly as an audience member shouted “we love you, John”.

AFTER 17 YEARS, Daily Show host Jon Stewart has announced he’s leaving the long-running satirical night-time slot.

He broke the news at the taping of last night’s edition — telling the audience he wasn’t sure yet when he was leaving, but that it was time for someone else to take the helm.

Stewart — who took over from first host Craig Kilborn in 1999 — has hinted in recent months that his tenure may be coming to an end, saying in interviews that he wasn’t sure if he’d still be around for the next presidential election.

He took a 12-week break to direct a movie, Rosewater, last summer. ‘Senior British Correspondent’ John Oliver, who filled in as main presenter for the summer, has since been given his own show at HBO.

Here’s how the comedian broke the news:

“This show doesn’t deserve an even slightly restless host, and neither do you,” he said, with an audience member shouting “we love you, John” as he continued his farewell.
