WICKLOW TD Stephen Donnelly is this evening holding a ‘town hall’ meeting in Bray to discuss the Fiscal Compact referendum, with fellow independent TD Shane Ross and economist Constantin Gurdgiev.
The forum, being chaired by Declan Meehan of East Coast FM, is aimed at assessing which of a Yes or No vote would pose the least harm to the economy in the long run.

Ah! Shane Ross – the guy who praised Ireland’s richest billionaire, Seán Quinn and said we should have more guys like him. We now have more people like Seán – about 450,000 of them!
Constantin & Stephen Donnelly though are always worth a listen.
+1 The others shout and offer little constructive comment. Donnelly on the other hand is always measured, never plays politics with the issue and is always well informed. A model opposition TD if ever there was one.
David i agree in part with your comment,
but i can’t bring myself to give u a thumbs up.
You must be too young to understand the gravity of what’s going on.
For as long as you hold your politicians in awe,
as u clearly do, you will not see clearly.
We are on the verge of opening up the door
to the death of an Irish Republic,
in favour of a ponzi scheme.
Happy to help folks, though we do have to give the credit to Stephen’s assistant Colin for being able to sort out the online stream and make the platform available for us to share it.
After this debate it’s still an even more resounding NO from me Because:
1. Politicians are all liars (well all most all)
2. I have not got a clue of the meaning of the text of the referendum. It’s deliberately wrote like this to con the people by politicians that can spin there deceiving spin….
3. This austerity referendum will impose austerity for decades to come on irish people.
4. When the penalties for failing to comply with the fiscal impact are not defined yet in the actual treaty itself… And we will fail to meet them u can be sure of that… The reason they are undefined is because they don’t want us to know what they will take from the nation next…. Oil, gas, timber,
5. Finally I will not give away our reminding sovereignty unless I’m absolutely sure what it is we’re really voting on… A lady at the hotel told about how she has a honors degree in English could not decipher this 11 page document…
Vote No No No… And I’m not politically aligned in any way…. It’s not negative for individuals to stand together and to say NO enough is enough and we don’t want anymore of your interfering. Don’t be conned or blackmailed by our lying politicians… They have lied over and over and over the selfish shower of so called statesmen
I don’t at all blame the English grad for not being able to make sense of it, you would need to be pretty familiar with the existing EU laws and the roles of each individual EU institution in order to be able to make it more digestible.
I appreciate that Gavin and thank you for it…. but we are not being asked to vote on a laymans terms or a simplified version of this treaty. We should demand that treaty’s including this one are easy to read plain and simple….
The laymans terms version is not a legal version of the original treaty… We can’t say oh but the laymans said this….
Jerry I simply didn’t want to paint all politicians with the same brush but after thinking bout it your right they are all a bunch of liars who lie to benefit themselves….
While I’m not and never have been a Labour voter, I have to give credit to Patrick Nulty. He’s seems to be a fairly decent TD and a man of his word who has voted against his party twice. The first time he did he was less than 2 weeks into his position. He’s also very much against the water charges as part of Labours manifesto was that there would be no introduction of them under their watch.
The trouble with the treaty is it doesn’t do anything to rectify the problems that got us into this mess in the first place. It can be interpreted in a number of ways from how I read it, which leads to two possibilities:
1. It was supposed to be written that way, to give politicians more power to manipulate things in the future.
2. They don’t know what they’re doing.
Either way, it’s not a good thing if this get’s passed.
If you watch the government spin on this thing, the video states that many of the points in the agreement are already part of other agreements. In that case why are in they in here again?? Also, if they’re part of other agreements then they obviously didn’t work then, so why will they now??
Everyone involved are shitting themselves, looking after their own, but trying to present it as essential for the good of all. That agreement isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. If I recall correctly the government was applauding how quickly it was put together – how’s that a benefit, if this thing is supposed to fix the EU surely you’d want to take your time and get it right??
I could write a better agreement, I really could. That doesn’t bode well for the Eurozone.
From my own point of view, I don’t think we need a fully unified Europe. the EU was fine the way it was before the Euro came into effect. But if people are expecting this agreement to be the answer to the current Eurozone crisis they’re in for a rude awakening.
The markets know it, the banks know it, politicians are either working for the banks, working for themselves or clueless. None of which are palatable options.
I like both Stephen Donnelly and Shane Ross but it’s hard to get away from the fact that between the two of them they collected close to 80k in expenses in a year, for a DART ticket maybe?
I am so disappointed with Stephen Donnelly.
I reckon there’s a good chance that the legacy of his voting will
follow him around. He was one of the last hopes i personally had left in politics.
This i think will be the most important decision that we will make for a long time to come.
Stephen you have chosen fear over possibility.
I will not vote for you again.
You do not have confidence in the irish people to come together
in the face of possible adversity.
And yes stephen, your public vote WILL count for something.
You ARE in a position of leadership,
and you have chosen keeping the ponzi scheme in favour
of trust in each other to overcome.
Constantin Gurdgiev, you are a patriot, a believer in trust,
in democracy, integrity and transparency.
Stephen, i hope you reconsider,
please trust in the spirit of people to rise to the occasion.
I’d vote for that. Considering what % of what we earn goes in taxes between PAYE, levies, charges, duty, VAT etc …there has to be a serious amount of savings O’Leary would make. Pretty sure the amount of “sick” days would drop.
