Man 'armed with samurai sword' robs shop

A man received a slash wound to his hand during the incident, which took place in the Westland Street area in Derry.

A MAN suffered a wound to his hand during a robbery by a man wielding a suspected samurai sword.

The reported armed robbery took place at a business premises in the Westland Street area of Derry in the early hours of this morning (Monday, 30 April).

The PSNI said that shortly after 2.10am, it was reported that a man entered a shop in the area armed with a suspected samurai sword.

A member of staff along with another man were threatened during the incident and the other man received a slash wound to his hand.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment to his injury, but police say it is not believed to be serious. A quantity of cigarettes were taken during the incident and the alleged robber made off towards the Gartan Square area.

It is also believed that damage was caused to a vehicle outside the premises as the man left the shop.
