Man arrested over murder of 8-year-old girl in Wexford on Sunday night

A MAN IN his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of murder in relation to a fatal assault on an eight-year-old girl in Co Wexford.

Malika Al Katib was assaulted at a home on William Street in New Ross at around 11.45pm on Sunday, 1 December.

Emergency services attended the scene and brought the young girl to University Hospital Waterford for treatment.

However, Malika died from her injuries in the early hours of Monday morning.

A woman and man in their 30s were also taken to University Hospital Waterford, though their injuries are not believed to have been life-threatening.

The man has been released from hospital and arrested on suspicion of murder.

He is currently detained at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region.

Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have any information on this fatal assault to come forward.

A garda spokesperson said the investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the postmortem examination took place yesterday and the results will not be released for operational reasons.
