Man charged with murder of Cavan pensioner

An 18-year-old man has been charged with the murder of 73-year-old pensioner Johnny Golden in Co Cavan last year.

AN 18-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with the murder of a pensioner in Cavan last year.

Brendan McGovern from Killahurk, Carrigallen, Co Leitrim was charged with murdering 73-year-old Johnny Golden in September 2010.

Golden died four weeks after being attacked in his home in Nedd, Doogary in Killeshandra on 7 September last year. The 73-year-old, who was unmarried and lived alone, suffered serious head and internal injuries during the attack.

He passed away in hospital from his injuries on 6 October 2010.

McGovern was arrested last night in connection with the assault and appeared at a special sitting of Ballyconnell District Court at 10.30am earlier this morning. RTÉ reports that no application was made for bail, and McGovern will remain in custody in Castlerea Prison before appearing at Virginia District Court on Friday.
