Search for manhole men concludes

The garda search for men reported to have climbed into a manhole in Dublin city centre concluded last night.

GARDAÍ CONCLUDED THEIR search for two men reported to have climbed down a manhole on Ship Street Little yesterday evening.

The search began yesterday morning after gardaí received a report at 10pm on Friday night saying that two men were seen climbing down the manhole.

After drafting in a sub aqua team to search the underground tunnels beneath, no sign of the men was found.

The tunnels are where the River Poddle flows beneath the city.

The search was concluded at 6.30pm yesterday and gardaí believe the men are long gone from the underground area beneath the manhole.

A garda spokesman said that CCTV footage from the scene is to be examined and gardaí are to investigate the situation.

A number of the Sunday papers suggest that the men climbed down the manhole with criminal motives. The Sunday Times says that they may have been planning to steal from a “high-profile target” in the nearby area, while the Sunday World says that it may have been reconnaissance activity by people planning to carry out a robbery.

However, gardaí could not confirm these reports.
