Man (70s) arrested in connection with 1973 murder of teenager in Co Tyrone

Marian Beattie’s body was found at the bottom of a quarry near Aughnacloy on the morning of Saturday 31 March 1973.

A MAN IN his 70s has been arrested in connection with the 1973 murder of 18-year-old Marian Beattie in Co Tyrone.

Marian’s body was found at the bottom of a quarry near Aughnacloy on the morning of Saturday 31 March 1973.

She was discovered only hours after she had attended a charity dance at Hadden’s Garage in Aughnacloy on Friday night to listen to her brother’s band.

Marian was last seen leaving the dance with a young man just after 1am and walking in the direction of Hadden’s Quarry, around 400 yards away.

Police never identified the young man she was reportedly last seen with.

This morning’s arrest follows a renewed appeal by the PSNI in March on the 53rd anniversary of her death.

The arrested man remains in custody.
