Moldovan tennis federation chief injured in explosion

The chairman of Moldova’s tennis federation, Igor Turcan, was seriously injured when a car exploded as he walked by in the capital Chisinau.

A CAR EXPLODED in Moldova’s capital today, badly injuring the chairman of the country’s tennis federation, police said.

Igor Turcan was wounded as he walked out of the tennis federation headquarters, police spokesman Adrian Jovmir said.

He said a Lada car with Russian registration plates parked near the headquarters exploded, seriously injuring him. Two other cars were also damaged in the blast, he said.

Jovmir said Turcan has been hospitalised and is in a serious condition. He risks losing his leg from the injuries.

Police are investigating whether the explosion was caused by a bomb. Turcan has business interests in Moldova’s construction sector.

Moldovan Prime Minister Vlad Filat called the incident “a regrettable accident,” saying it was too early to draw conclusions about what happened.
