The 9 at 9 At least 39 dead after Spain train collision, Tánaiste to discuss fresh US tariff threats, and inquest into death of Belfast schoolboy to get under way

LAST UPDATE | 19 Jan

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know to start the day.

Spain

1. At least 39 people have died after a high-speed train collision in southern Spain, Spanish police said.

Tariff threats

2. Tánaiste Simon Harris is heading to Brussels to meet with European finance ministers today, where they will discuss the threat of fresh tariffs by the US. On Saturday, Trump announced he would be levying tariffs of 10% on all goods sold in the US by eight European nations until the US acquires Greenland.

Greenland

3. Trump said he no longer feels an obligation to think “purely of peace”, in a letter sent to the prime minister of Norway attempting to justify his threats against Greenland.

Child Law Project

4. A child found in a Dublin street by a passerby was believed to have been trafficked into Ireland for sex, The Child Law Project reported.

Belfast

5. A long-awaited inquest to set to get under way into the death of Belfast schoolboy Noah Donohoe.

Coldplay scam

6. A woman who was scammed by a catfish pretending to be Coldplay’s Chris Martin is struggling to recoup her money, five years later.

Inequality

7. It takes an Irish billionaire less than a full working day to make the average person’s yearly salary. That’s one of the stark claims in Oxfam’s wealth inequality report, which the NGO says shows that the gap between rich and poor has grown rapidly in the last year.

Children’s rights

8. A group representing advocates for children in child care court proceedings is taking legal advice over a new state service which would reduce their number by a third, claiming Minister for Children Norma Foley “appears to be unaware of the unravelling of… protections for children”.

AFCON final

9. Senegal stunned hosts Morocco in last night’s Africa Cup of Nations final as Pape Gueye’s goal gave them a 1-0 extra-time win over the hosts at the end of a match marred by remarkable scenes following a controversial penalty award.
