€1billion investment to help customers know their power

Bord Gáis Energy is prioritising Ireland’s green future with renewed innovation.

CELEBRATING FIVE DECADES in business, Bord Gáis Energy is prioritising Ireland’s green future with renewed innovation.

Catherine Lonergan, Director of Customer & Commercial for the group, says they are building on their legacy to power Ireland’s greener future.

“Bord Gáis Energy has played a central role in supporting Irish homes, communities and businesses. With proud roots in Bord Gáis Éireann, we’ve built a legacy of powering progress in Ireland.

“Originally, we were focused on delivering a new, cleaner fuel and building the infrastructure to support it. Today, we’re supporting a fundamental shift in how energy is produced, used and managed, while giving customers more control.”

“We’re giving customers the confidence to know their power.”

Recent years have highlighted how exposed energy systems can be to global shocks and conflict, bringing households unexpected rising costs and uncertainty.

The climate emergency, alongside these political factors, is reshaping how energy is produced, used and valued.

With all this uncertainty, Irish customers are looking for practical ways to cut bills,
reduce carbon and have confidence in their future.

It’s for these reasons that Bord Gáis Energy say they are undergoing a fundamental shift from traditional utility to modern energy partner.

Catherine Lonergan added: “With more than 715,000 residential and business customers nationwide, our purpose is to energise a greener, fairer future. We have a clear ambition to be a net zero business by 2040 and to support customers on their journey to net zero by 2050.”

The transformation is backed up by long-term investment.

Bord Gáis Energy is part of Centrica plc, who together are investing €1 billion in Ireland between 2024 and 2029 to accelerate the energy transition.

They say this investment will enable delivery of innovative solutions for customers while continuing to invest in the critical infrastructure that the national energy system depends on.

The group are also investing in building “green skills” through expanded apprenticeships, upskilling existing engineers, and developing in-house training for technologies like heat pumps and solar.

All of Bord Gáis Energy’s electricity plans are powered by 100% renewable electricity, and the company is expanding access to technologies to give customers greater control of their energy. This includes smart tariffs, heating controls, EV chargers, solar, heat pumps and advanced energy management systems.

Solar energy is also playing a powerful role in this shift. Following the group’s acquisition of Swyft Energy, more than 12,000 solar installations are planned by 2029, across homes and farms, helping customers reduce reliance on the grid.

A collaboration with the Irish Farmers’ Association enables tailored solar installations to be installed in farms nationwide, while an SEAI-recognised One Stop Shop provides a trusted, end-to-end pathway for deep home energy retrofits, simplifying what can otherwise feel complex.

The One Stop Shop removes the hassle and manages the journey end-to-end from assessment to installation for each individual customer, from young families to farming businesses.

Bord Gais Energy say they have a commitment to demystify energy, put control back in customers’ hands, and show that sustainability and affordability can go hand in hand — with warmer homes, lower bills and lower emissions.

Catherine Lonergan adds: “As Ireland transitions to net zero, we believe success depends on trust, practical action and inclusion. After 50 years energising Ireland, Bord Gáis Energy is clear about the decades ahead: partnering with customers to lead a greener, fairer energy future, together.”
