A MAN TAKEN to hospital with serious injuries earlier today after a light aircraft crash some 15km east of Belfast has died from his injuries.
Police, the fire service, and the ambulance service all responded to the incident at Newtownards Airfield, which happened shortly before 11.20am.
A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire Service said two appliances attended the scene.
One crew sprayed the plane with compressed air foam, to reduce the risk of a fire breaking out. The other crew helped treat a seriously injured man, who was taken from the fuselage by paramedics and rushed to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.
It was later confirmed that the man died from his injuries.
“Air Accident Investigation Branch have been informed and will be the lead agency in this investigation,” the PSNI said in a statement.
No other aircraft were involved, and the man was the only person on board the plane.
